Fire razes largest foodstuff market in Kano

The largest foodstuff market in Kano was at the early hours of Monday, 13 March, 2023 razed down by a mysterious fire.

The fire which witnesses said began at the early hours of Monday morning, razed shops destroying goods and properties worth several millions of naira.

It was said to had raged until about 8a.m. before the combined efforts of firefighters and traders could bring the situation under control preventing it from spreading  to do more damage.

Abubakar Aminu; one of the victims lamented that he received a call from gatemen at about 1:15 a.m, but at about 2:00 a.m when he arrived at the market, he found his  shop in huge flame and was unable to savage anything.

He narrated, three more plazas housing over 100 shops stocked with goods worth millions of naira, were also consumed in the mysterious fire.

“Honestly we have lost a lot. My neighbour whose shop was also burnt to ashes stocked three trailers of goods yesterday night. They are all gone now."
Another witness; Basiru Dauda Kunya, narrated: “The house is called Gidan Sojoji and has about 10 shops in front and warehouses inside. The fire also spread to Savanah House and then to Bello Dandago road."

The market popularly known as Singer market is located along Ibrahim Taiwo road in Kano. 

This is the third fire outbreak within two months in major markets in the State, it was said.
