... As possible defeat looms!
By Ekotomena Henrietta Abavo, Asaba
Ahead of the Saturday, 11 March, 2023 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections across the country; spate of resignation by appointees and members has continued to hit the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa's administration and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Delta State.
Governor Okowa and his principal; Atiku Abubakar; flag bearers of the PDP on Saturday, 25 February, 2023 lost the Presidential election to the candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC); Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Shettima.
This no doubts may have fueled the onslaught of resignations as the resigners feels the game is over; and no need hanging on for a moment!
Many of the persons resigning from the Okowa's administration and the Party; (PDP) stayed on till the 11th hour; before jumping ship; and now wants to realign and work to massively deliver the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday and maybe; the Labour Party; new love in town.
Against this odd, Governor Okowa still having in his heart the pain of defeat in his own election of the Presidential contest; is in a huge delima and under serious pressure to deliver for his Party on Saturday.
Political commentators say achieving this task in the prevailing situation, is comparable to climbing mount Kilimanjaro.
This is as the once popular Governor amongst the people, currently faces widespread hatred and rejection for alleged misrule; also for having betrayed the South - South region for self gains, to had joined Atiku as running mate in the February Presidential election.
Top of his alleged sins include; plunging the State into a deep ditch of debts and having aided the emergence of a PDP candidate in the person of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly; Sheriff Oborevbori who to many does not possess the required qualities to be Governor of the State.
Now except God's miracle happens; the PDP which had ruled Delta State since 1999 when the fourth republic began; is likely to woefully lose both the Governorship and the House of Assembly elections to the opposition.
With the majority of the voters' sudden love for the Peter Obi led Labour Party (LP); not helping matters at all!
A visit to Delta State reveals that the people's anger walks the streets; and their resolve to take their pound of flesh against the administration of Governor Okowa and his Party; the PDP is settled and non negotiable at this time!
Here we bring you some of the resignations amongst many others:
Olorogun Omoru Akposheri David, a kinsman to the Governorship candidate of the APC, Ovie Omo Agege had been Executive Assistant to the Governor for 10 years holding different portfolios.
"... permit me to extend my services to other persons, group, or Organization, political party or Government that I may deem fit, having successfully and conscientiously served you in private and official capacity, for 10 or more years" Omoru stated in his resignation letter.
He also resigned his membership of the PDP.
Comrade Ovouzorie Macaulay was once Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
Resigning his membership of the PDP, he writes: "The decision to resign my membership of the PDP is based on the overt exhibition of impunity, blackmail, falsehood and disregard for Party rules by the leadership.
"Over the past years, I painfully endured the arrogance and misdemeanor of the Party leadership; and actually appealed for a change to no avail.
"Thus, I am left with no choice but to bow out of the Party."
As in his own resignation, Chief Odiriverere Kesito Oweh states: "The PDP is now a Kingdom of slave drivers, thieves liars and deceivers.
"My supporters and myself no longer accept this monkey dey work and baboon dey chop. We have therefore decided to move on."
Ishomare Kate is a woman leader and special assistant on women mobilization to DESOPADEC commissioner.
In her resignation letter, she writes: "the Party is now full of egocentric, insubordinate appointees of the State Government who are self acclaimed leaders; who does not have respect for the Party founding fathers, critical stakeholders and supporters.
"These appointees now parade themselves as in coming commissioners and board members even before election which is ideologically wrong.
"I also disassociate myself from the PDP inequity, deceitful, outright betrayal, stigmatization and exclusion of stakeholders in the affairs of the Party."
These are few of the many resignation letters; that have surfaced in the media space ahead of the Saturday's elections.
All the resigners say; they are disenchanted with the many ills in the PDP under the leadership of the administration of Governor Okowa; and now seek new platforms and alliances to actualize their political dreams and aspirations.
