...appeals for support of Govt. Others
By Henrietta Abavo, Benin
The people of Obazagbon Village in Oredo Local Government Council Area of Edo State have decided to embark on some self help projects instead of the usual wait for Government.
A couple of days ago, in an enlarged meeting of the elders and youth group, they excitedly talked about their efforts to make life better for residents of the Village maximizing available scare resources.
The Odionwere, Pa. Vincent Edogiawerie in a chat with our reporter narrated that in spite of nearness of Obazagbon Village to the seat of Government in the Capital City of Benin, it is plagued with several challenges.
Roads in the Village are in bad shape, as erosion and flooding ravages residents.
Also, insecurity has continued to steal the peace of mind enjoyed in the Village; as vandals repeatedly tamper with the electricity transformer which supplies light to residents and often make them live in darkness.
Therefore, the Odionwere Vincent Edogiawerie led Council of elders in consultation with the people, decided to tackle some of the challenges themselves.
"We have effected repairs on the transformer and now in perfect working condition, after it was vandalized by unknown persons.
"Also, we embarked on building a modern market of about 30 shades, with intention to expand when the resources are available.
"It may also interest you to know that the existing market before now was too close to the tarred road, thereby posing danger to users. So, it was relocated to a better site", he said.
To help reduce insecurity in the locality, Odionwere Edogiawerie disclosed that as part of the self help efforts, the services of the local vigilante outfit have been employed on the pay roll of the Village.
"In the face of daunting challenges and very scarce financial resources, these are some of the self help efforts we have taken so far, he said.
"But we want to passionately appeal for the intervention of the State Government and the local Government even financially well positioned individuals, to help increase the development and growth of Obazagbon Village, as funding is our biggest obstacle," Odionwere Vincent Edogiawerie said.
The secretary, Christopher Omoregbe also spoke in the same vein as he commended youths of the Village; for their collaborative efforts in the tackling of challenges confronting them.
