Breaking news...APC Edo refutes Akohia's assertion on zoning

...Says ticket open to all aspirants!

From our political desk, Benin

The Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) on Monday, 4 December, 2023 declared that its ticket for the Governorship election in the State next year, remains open to all of its aspirants.

The APC made the declaration in a press statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Peter Enosoregbe Uwadiae Igbinigie Esq. and availed journalists in Benin, the State Capital.

The Party made the declaration in a swift reaction to the assertion of one Alhaji Akohia that aspirants on its platform from the North and Central zones of the State, have been directed to step down by its leadership for a particular aspirant of the South zone of the State.

"The APC Edo received with rude shock, the puerile assertions and mundane vituperations of one Aihaji Akokhia of Etsako west local government Chapter at an illegally convened meeting of some leaders of the locality to the effect that intending aspirants from Edo - North and Edo Central Senatorial Districts have been advised by the party to step down or drop their ambition for a particular aspirant from Edo South Senatorial District.

"Further, the said Alhaji Akokhia Abubakar also alluded the misgivings that our National leader, senator Adams Aliu Oshiomole has been inundated with petitions from party faithful which gives unbridled credence to his puerile campaign.

"Let it be known that the Party previously said that there is no zoning and for the clear avoidance of doubt, nobody from any of the Senatorial Districts has been discouraged or told and barred from contesting the Gubernatorial elections provided the person has met the requisite qualifying conditions set out in the 1999 Constitution as Amended and the Electoral Act 2022 and other subsidiary laws incidental to it.

"It is also the party's position and to erase any misgivings that our National leader, senator Adams Aliu Oshiomole has been inundated with any petition or petitions in respect of and or in connection with any Senatorial District that should produce the next Governor of the State.

"A background check by the party leadership is that our National leader, senator Adams Aliu Oshiomhole is not opposed to the party on the issue of zoning.

"That there is no zoning, as any member of the party is at liberty to contest for the exalted position of the governor of the State.

"Infact,  our National leader is very positively disposed to a transparent party primary as the exponent of  "one man, one vote " slogan in the Nigerian political space.

"The party therefore emphatically posit that all that Alhaji Akokhia and his co- travellers have said at their illegal meeting are 'self serving' as same does not represent the position of the party, because there was no meeting held known to the party where such far reaching decisions were taken.

"Hence his assertions should be ignored and rejected.

"The party have consequently directed the EXCO of his local government to interrogate him on those nebulous issues  callously raised by him.

"The party also advised all aspirants across the State to go about their campaigns in the most dignified manner,  while we await the national secretariat on the party primary."
