... Says it's political recklessness and propaganda taken too far!
Henrietta Abavo, Benin
The All Progressives Congress (APC), Edo State Chapter has taken to the cleaners; 'Feed the Hungry' Initiative of the Governor Godwin Obaseki led administration, describing it as another misplaced priority and means to loot the State's resources.
Obaseki on Friday, March 8, 2024 launched the Initiative pledging the sum of one billion naira monthly as funding.
The APC in reaction through its Publicity Secretary, Peter Enosoregbe Uwadiae Igbinigie Esq in an exclusive chat with the 'Super FM' radio and availed journalists in Benin on Sunday, questions the statistics and database the Governor relied upon to determine the number of hungry people in the State.
The Party wondered how a Governor who failed to account for palliatives made available to the State by the Federal Government to cushion the harsh effect of the economy; suddenly wakes up to feed the poor.
It also questioned why the Governor is hasty in appropriating the sum of one billion naira to a project which has no legislative backing.
Alleging that it was only a design to mop up funds for his anointed candidate and Party; ahead of the State Governorship Election holding in September 2024.
Edo people must therefore beware of the antics of the Governor who is at the tail end of his administration, but bent on deploying State resources to phantom projects, the APC urged.
Adding; that the Governor should rather focus on providing good governance to Edo people instead of making empty promises which lack logic.
"This is a political recklessness and propaganda taken too far!
"There are pertinent questions the Governor needs to answer before even coming to the implementation of the initiative.
"One; where are the statistics the Governor is to use in identifying the Edo hungry people?
"Who is not hungry in Edo today due to the anti people policies of this administration?
"What has happened to the Federal Government palliative; how has the State Government under Obaseki dealt with such programs?
"The Governor has failed to tell Edo people where he is going to source the money from.
"The law in a democracy like ours demands that the Governor has to seek the approval of the Legislature before such a huge amount of tax payers' money can be spent.
"It is clear that this is another conduit pipe by which the common patrimony of the Edo people is to be looted by the Obaseki's administration.
"The Obaseki's administration is at its twilight; it should stop devising means to cause Edo people pain.
"It's common knowledge that this is the election year; and this is an avenue for the Governor to aggregate money to fund the Governorship election of his anointed candidate.
"We want to therefore advise Edo people not to be deceived by this white elephant project because its implementation will end in the private pocket of Obaseki's cronies and his co-travellers.
"We want to appeal that the Obaseki's administration should stop playing with the minds of Edo people and the Governor should know that all such programs have not ended well in terms of positive impacts on the people.
"The APC condemns the Initiative in all of its ramifications as the Governor cannot at the twilight of his administration, do things as if we are not in a democracy.
"We believe strongly that the Governor does not have the requisite statistics to effectively implement the so called 'Feed the Poor' initiative.
"Hence we are saying that the Initiative is not only a sham full of deceit, but a clear design to again siphon Edo people's common wealth.
