BREAKING NEWS: Veteran Nigerian Singer, Onyeka Onwenu transits at 72!

Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress, Onyeka Onwenu reportedly has transited to the great beyond at age 72.

According to media reports early morning, on Wednesday, 31 August, 2024, Onwenu was said to have died Tuesday night, 30 August, 2024.

She had a stage performance at a friend's birthday party in Lagos, Mrs. Stella Okoli who works for the Emzor Pharmaceutical, but suddenly slumped after returning to her seat.

Immediately, an emergency was contacted and she was rushed to the Reddington Hospital but unfortunately she could not make it, reports said.

According to a witness account who was at the party;

“It is very sad, Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.

“She was taken to Reddington Hospital but she couldn’t make it,” the unnamed witness reportedly said.

Born in 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria; Onyeka dubbed as the “Elegant Stallion” by the Nigerian press has been active in the music industry since the 1980s.

The multi talented late artiste turned politician and rights activist, was at a time the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.

In 2013, she was appointed the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.

She will be remembered for her many hit songs and albums amongst which; 'Wait for me' which did with the Juju maestro, King Sunny Ade, 'Iyogogo', 'One Love', and 'Ekwe'.

However, at the time of filing this report Wednesday, there has not been any official confirmation from her family.
