On behalf of the people of Ekowe Village in Ovia North East Local Government Council Area of Edo State, the Ozukpogieva (2nd in Command), Pa. Igbinosun Emmanuel has commended His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II CFR for the resuscitation and sustenance of the age long celebration of Emorho feast (New yam festival) in Benin kingdom.

Pa. Igbinosun made the commendation while speaking to journalists on the celebration of the Emorho feast (new yam festival) at the Palace of the Oba of Benin recently.

He recalled that the Emorho feast was celebrated in the days of old in every home in Benin Kingdom; during the harvest season to begin the eating of the new yam and other farm produce.

As it was an occasion too, to offer praises to God Almighty and the ancestors for the favours and blessings of the past planting season; ask for success, and blessing of bountiful harvest; in the new planting season.

But with the infiltration and embrace of the western ways of life by the people, it was almost going into extinction before the great Oba Ewuare II intervention and revival of the age long culture and traditions of the land.

"Our culture and traditions are our identity and should be visible in everything we do, our mode of dressing, ways of doing things and so on; the white men we are copying have their culture and traditions which are alien to our own culture.

"So it is very necessary that we sell our own culture and traditions to them instead, if you have something and you do not value it, other people will make mockery of it," he said.

Felicitating Oba Ewuare II on the successful celebration of the Emorho feast and his 8th year anniversary on the throne, Pa. Igbinosun prayed that God Almighty and the ancestors of the Kingdom grants him wisdom, longevity and enduring peace as he led the people of the land.

Also speaking, secretary of the Village, Mr. Friday Osayande emphasised it should be a matter of priority that the people ensure their own culture and traditions supersede the foreign culture that has eaten so deep into our culture.

He also commended Oba Ewuare II CFR, for the preservation, and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of the Benin people.

Continuing, both leaders of Ekowe Village seized the opportunity to appeal to the State Government, and the Oba to help in the provision of basic amenities, like a functional health center which he said is non-existent in the community.

Also, school and portable water to help alleviate the sufferings of the people.
