A socio cultural group of the Benin Kingdom; 'Benin Solidarity Forum' (BUF), has told the outgoing Vice chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. Lilian Imuetiyan Salami, not to truncate the already established succession order.

Since the year 2009, through the agitation of the Benin nation; host of the University, there was already an established succession order which makes qualified Professors of the Benin extraction, ascends the office of the Vice Chancellor.

An established order of which the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Salami benefitted, hence it should be sustained, the Group said.

The BUF conveyed its message in a statement signed by the President, Iyamu Osarodion Culture and Secretary-general, Osayuki-Osa Benson and availed journalists in Benin, the Edo State Capital.

“As we await the outcome of the Selection Committee statutorily set up by your leadership in view to picking the most qualified Professors amongst those who applied for the position of Vice-Chancellor, it is sacrosanct for us to remind you not to jettison our 2009 struggle which paved the way for your emergence as Vice-Chancellor of University of Benin and other two Vice-Chancellors of Benin extraction.”

Going further, the BUF stressed: “Consequent upon the above, we therefore call on you to respect the wishes of the sovereignty of Benin Kingdom and entire Benin people.”

In the same vein, a week ago the Group accused Professor Salami of acting “anti-Benin plot” by working towards imposing a candidate of Yoruba extraction to succeed her.

Professor Salami having spent the mandatory five years in office will be exiting in December, and the process to pick her successor has commenced in earnest.

However, efforts to get response from the Vice Chancellor in regards to the accusations as at the time of filing this story, was not successful.
