Finally, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced appointment of the long awaited head coach for the nation's men senior team, the Super Eagles.
On Tuesday, 7 January, 2025, news reports said Eric Chelle who led the Malian national team to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 in Cote d'Ivoire, was named by the NFF in a statement as the new head coach.
Following unresolved disagreement, former international, Finidi George unceremoniously resigned the position in June, 2024 barely after two months he was in charge.
In his place, another former international, and now the Technical director of the football body, Austen Eguavoen was drafted; who has qualified the team for the next Nations cup finals in Morocco.
According to the report, the 47-year-old Chelle was recommended for the job by the NFF technical and development sub-committee on January 2nd.
The recommendation was said to have been endorsed by the federation executive committee, a few hours before the announcement.
He is the first-ever non-Nigerian African to be named the head coach of the Eagles.
Chelle led Mali to the quarter finals at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire where the country lost to the hosts in extra time.
The new Super Eagles tactician appointment takes effect immediately, and he is responsible for guiding the team to earn a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
The Malian’s first task will be the next round of games against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
Nigeria is currently fifth in Group C of the qualifier even as the team is winless after four games.

Éric Sékou Chelle (born 11 November 1977) is a professional football manager and a former player who plied his trade as a centre-back.
Born in Ivory Coast to a French father and a Malian mother, he made five appearances for the Mali national team.
Club Career
Chelle holds French nationality and spent his whole career in France, appearing for Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. At international level, he represented Mali.
Coaching career
In May 2021 was appointed head coach of US Boulogne.He was dismissed by Boulogne on 11 December 2021, after the club gained three points in preceding ten games.
In 2022, Chelle was appointed manager of Mali and guided the Eagles of Mali to the Quarter Finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations which held in 2024 losing to hosts, Cote D'Ivoire in Extra Time. He was dismissed on 13 June 2024.
